Russia is gearing up to start mass production of BAZ trucks, a new line of vehicles designed to combine military-grade durability with the comfort of premium foreign brands like Mercedes. Serial production is expected to begin in July 2025 at the Romanov plant in St. Petersburg.
According to Dmitry Grechukhin, CEO of Romanov, BAZ trucks are set to replace off-road models from Volvo, MAN, Scania, Mercedes, DAF, Iveco, and Renault. The Russian truck boasts superior off-road capabilities thanks to its independent suspension system, a feature that sets it apart from its competitors, which typically rely on dependent suspension.
Another standout feature is the modular platform and transport axles, developed using insights gained from analyzing vehicles used in active combat zones. This military-inspired design ensures unmatched reliability and complete independence from foreign components, though it remains unclear whether this applies to all international parts or just those from unfriendly nations.
BAZ trucks are not just about rugged performance. They offer a level of comfort comparable to foreign models, with features such as:
Depending on the cab configuration—five options are available—the truck can accommodate one or two sleeping berths.
This year, the plant plans to produce 200 civilian vehicles, with production volumes expected to increase tenfold within two years. Potential customers include industries like logging, oil and gas extraction, and road construction, particularly in harsh environments like the Far North, where roads are virtually nonexistent.
Looking ahead, the engineering team aims to develop 8x8 and 10x10 wheelbase variants, as well as a gas-powered model, further expanding the BAZ lineup.
